Newly Lorded, i am the heavy champion of Appledore, Lord Hallbjorn Skjalda Hrafnsson
Greetings, My name is Landon. i am a crafter, medieval reenactor and a huge Star Wars fan!
I am 26 years old and I am Autistic, I was diagnosed at age 11. i reside in the West Kootenays of British Columbia, Canada.
Being autistic, I have many special interests: crafting, cosplaying, medieval recreation and star wars are just some of them.
Now to begin to understand why I got into crafting, we have to look at what made me want to do it. The answer is simple....Star Wars. It all started at a bowling alley in grade 3 I was about 8 or 9. We had star wars names on the bowling screens, and we had a very big star wars nerd in my class, I remember asking him what it was and why the names were so cool and interesting. Ever since that moment, star wars has been my life. star wars saved my life, i was a young boy who had no imagination, my mom says i had a friend over that was pretending that a skipping rope was a snake.. well being the very literal person i am, i simply said dude that's a rope. he kept saying the snake was going to eat him and i simply could not see it as anything other than a rope. so that's where Star Wars comes in to play. it gave me an imagination, i unlike neurotypical children, had to learn to have an imagination like many other things i had to learn through my life.
so now you know Star wars is important to me. this was the reason i wanted to learn to craft things. if i could create my own costumes and build them the way i wanted them to be built, then i would be set. thing is i hated sewing in grade 8. that was around the time i wanted to start making things. so after grade 8 i moved to another small town in the West Kootenays that was better for me and that had a more accepting and better school. so for halloween that year i wanted to be a Sith Lord of my own creation from star wars. that was the year that the game "Star Wars: the old republic came out. it is a fantastic MMORPG. i loved role playing and i still do to this day. the stories i could create with others and i could just be me which was important to me. it came out December 2011. i even got to beta test for a few weekends before launch. which was epic. so because of that game and other factors i started costuming. my first attempts weren't as good as i had hoped but i did better as i got better at planning and sewing.
in 2013 or 2014 i started a Live Action Roleplaying group after having watched the movie role models which was my inspiration. i was like 15 or 16 at the time and living in a group home. so this was my outlet, i made it a group where everyone was welcome. i even had other autistics as members. which is how i got into the Society for Creative Anachronism or SCA for short. there was an awesome mother and son who were in my LARP group. the mom was in the SCA and has been for along time. so when 2015 comes around she invited me to the "Shire of Appledores" feast of spring. it was my first medieval event and i was so excited. i made a bedsheet t-tunic and a cloak. i won best dressed newcomer that day. ive been hooked ever since.
So thats my progression of things. after joining the SCA i discovered a whole new world of things that i never thought would be possible for me to access. I learn about armoured fighting, leather work, armouring, all the costuming, and so many more skills that are useful to this day. The SCA is a medieval recreation and educational society that exists in many countries around the world. There are many kingdoms and groups throughout what we call the Knowne World. It's a really amazing thing filled with equally amazing people.
